Hair serums are everywhere. From pharmacy shelves to premium cosmetic lines, the number of hair and scalp serums have expanded rapidly as consumers look for convenient, topical solutions to thinning hair. As stylists, we have a responsibility to our clients to provide them with solutions that actually live up to their promises. For decades, minoxidil serums have been the go-to active: widely recognized, FDA-approved, with deep roots in many medical spas and salons.
But the category is changing quickly. New products keep appearing, and most do not deserve a second look. Recently, though, one name started moving through our stylist network: NOVOGRO™ (NV). It came through a research paper being shared in professional circles, and the science goes deep. The short version: NOVOGRO™ is a proprietary class of molecules designed around follicle biology, and it is the technology behind RE:YOU, an emerging brand taking a more biology-first approach to female hair thinning.
Minoxidil: The Benchmark That Defined the Category
It may be a surprise to you, but Minoxidil wasn't originally designed for hair at all. It began as a treatment for hypertension, before its hair growth effects were accidentally discovered and it was repurposed into one of the most widely used topical solutions today.
It works, but for some clients, it comes with real trade-offs. Our clients often report itching, irritation, and devastatingly, initial shedding.
The growth was not the only thing I noticed. I also had to deal with itching and irritation, which made the routine feel like part-time maintenance work.
— Salon client, 32, using topical minoxidil for 6 months
And sometimes, the trade-off can become part of the hairstyle.
Client Case Study
After four years, one of my clients decided to stop using minoxidil. In January 2021, she started using topical 5% liquid minoxidil and in June 2023, she reduced the minoxidil strength to 2% because of side effects.
What improved
- Hair count increased
- Some strands became thicker in diameter
What became difficult
- Unwanted facial hair growth and facial swelling (improved after switching from 5% to 2%)
- Texture change in applied area; the hair became much curlier, hairline changed into tighter ringlets
- Constant frizz; some hairs only grew a few inches before shedding, while others grew longer. Made styling difficult.
- Had to shampoo every morning (liquid formula was greasy). Made the curls even puffier.
The curliness is the last straw and why I'm pulling the plug. It became curly slowly over the years and I only recently realized what was happening ... It's ridiculous looking and absolutely impossible to style. I literally haven't had a good hair day in years.
— Female hair-loss client, diagnosed with pattern hair loss, using topical minoxidil for 4 years
Clients do not just ask what grows hair. They ask what will actually make their hair easier to live with.
Minoxidil results typically depend on consistent, long-term use, often across six months or more. Even then, outcomes vary. A lot.
A key limitation lies in its design. Minoxidil primarily operates through a single biological pathway (or so scientists think), which can leave other causes of hair thinning unaddressed.
NOVOGRO™: A Multi-Pathway Approach to Hair Support
NOVOGRO™ represents a shift in how hair serums are developed and positioned. Rather than relying on a single mechanism, it is built around a multi-target strategy to address several root causes of hair thinning at once.
Our team was able to get in touch with the researchers behind NOVOGRO™ to better understand how they went about their discovery. What stood out to us was not just that they found new ingredients, it was how intentionally they searched for them.
First, they used AI-enabled screening to search through a massive ingredient universe and hone in on molecules that can actually support the hair follicle.
Second, they tested candidates in models that behave more like real hair follicles.
Third, they evaluated safety, specificity, and performance before treating the ingredients as serious candidates.
At a functional level, NOVOGRO™ works across three follicle-relevant pathways:
Scalp environment support | NV-273
Supports oxygen-response, metabolic signaling, VEGF-related activity, and the local environment around the follicle. This partly associates with minoxidil’s blood-flow logic, but goes broader.
DHT-related stress modulation | NV-1065
Helps reduce DHT production, the major driver of hair follicle miniaturization.
Follicle cell support | NV-623 + NV-624
Works with the other pathways to support the health and vitality of hair follicle cells responsible for growing new hair, especially the cellular environment that helps determine whether hair grows stronger, weaker, or not at all.
No client needs to remind us how complex hair thinning can be, and how it can vary so significantly between one client and another. Across dozens of experts we spoke to, they agreed that this is the most comprehensive approach they've ever seen across dozens of other brands (e.g., Vegamour, KilgourMD, Nutrafol, etc.). This approach is one that actually aligns the most closely with the complex biology of hair growth, according to our medical experts.
I am never looking at just one thing when a client sits in my chair with thinning hair. I am looking at density, scalp condition, breakage, miniaturization, styling habits, stress, and how the hair is behaving week to week. A multi-pathway approach makes sense because thinning rarely shows up as a single-pathway problem.

But a product story only matters if the results show up. In early lab testing, NOVOGRO™ (NV) showed stronger HIF-1α activation than the minoxidil-based formula. HIF-1α helps regulate important pathways in the follicle environment tied to oxygen demand, nutrient support, and repair. Some of these follicle-support pathways are associated with minoxidil, while NOVOGRO™’s signal here points to a broader follicle-support pathway.
HIF-1α ACTIVATION % CHANGE VS. UNTREATED CONTROL
NV showed about 7.9x higher HIF-1α activation than the minoxidil-based formula.
But NOVOGRO™ is designed to go further. It also supports dermal papilla cells, which help drive hair growth, and targets 5α-reductase, the DHT-related enzyme involved in follicle miniaturization.
The researchers behind NOVOGRO™ also built 3D mini hair follicles in the lab to see whether a treatment is actually encouraging follicle activity. These are not the same as real hair growing from a scalp, but they are one of the more realistic lab tools for studying early follicle behavior because the cells can interact and form follicle-like structures instead of sitting flat in a dish.
In the comparison, they tested three groups: vehicle, meaning the base formula without the active growth ingredients; a minoxidil-based formula; and NOVOGRO™. The minoxidil-treated mini follicle showed outgrowth close to the vehicle group, while the NOVOGRO™-treated mini follicle showed the clearest elongation: 40.9% more follicle-like outgrowth than the 2% minoxidil formula, suggesting a more active response.

For clients, the data takeaway is simple: this early data suggests NOVOGRO™ may help support stronger follicle-like growth activity than a traditional minoxidil-based formula. It does not prove real-world results yet, but it gives us a reason to pay attention.
Of course, what matters most is what happens on actual scalps. NOVOGRO™ is currently being evaluated in a double-blind, head-to-head study against minoxidil with 150+ participants, and that is the data I am waiting for. As soon as we know more, I will share it.
Tying it Together
Minoxidil helped define the modern hair serum category and will remain the gold standard. But hair science has moved forward, and the industry is overdue for ingredients developed specifically around the complexity of thinning hair.
NOVOGRO™ is early, but it has already started moving through the hair professionals we pay attention to based on its strong scientific data. Is it the industry’s best kept secret? Too soon to call, but it is one of the few new names we are actually watching. We are waiting to see how RE:YOU brings the technology into a real serum, and we will share updates as more product details and clinical data become available.
The new generation of hair serums will feature ingredients developed specifically for hair thinning. They won't be designed around a single pathway, but multiple pathways to tackle hair thinning in a comprehensive, systematic way.
